Syllabus For Math 5270
Fall, 2002 at UWYO
- COURSE TITLE.
- Functional Analysis
- TEXTS.
- Textbook: Foundations of Modern Analysis by Avner Friedman.
Recommended Readings: Linear Operator Theory in Engineering and Science
by Arch Naylor and George Sell, Methods of Modern Mathematical
Physics I: Functional Analysis by Michael Reed and Barry Simon.
- COURSE DESCRIPTION.
- We will cover most material from a
traditional functional analysis course but with emphases placed
on the engineering and physics applications of the theory. Topics
to be covered include:
- Metric spaces, linear spaces, and the Lp-spaces.
The Stone-Weierstrass theorem. The Baire category theorem.
- Banach space theory: Uniform boundedness principle, the
closed-graph theorem, the Hahn-Banach theorem, the Fredholm alternative,
and applications to partial differential equations.
- Hilbert space theory: The spectral theorem,
foundations of quantum mechanics.
- Unbounded operators: The spectral theorem, quadratic forms, Friedrichs
extension theorem, problems in quantum mechanics.
